Proofs were generally produced in low numbers by the art studios as they awaited approval for the design from the record company and/or artists and so only a handful would normally exist. Some never made it past the drawing board! In many cases they differ from the released version as changes were made, making them very rare. In the digital age they disappeared and so have become increasingly sought after.
In the case of cromalin proofs, normally only one or maybe two were made due to the high cost of production.
